A retainer is a custom-made oral appliance designed to keep your child’s teeth in their new, correct positions following orthodontic treatment. If your child has recently completed braces or other orthodontic procedures, Dr. John Riehs may recommend a retainer to ensure their smile stays beautifully aligned. As children grow, their teeth can shift; wearing a retainer helps prevent this natural movement, maintaining optimal oral health, functionality and appearance.
There are three primary types of retainers your child might need:
Hawley Retainers
These traditional retainers consist of metal wires and clasps set into a plastic body that fits snugly against the roof of the mouth or along the tongue-side of the lower teeth. The wires help keep the teeth in place, while the clasps anchor the retainer securely. Hawley retainers are durable and can be adjusted if necessary.
Clear Retainers
Made from a transparent plastic material, clear retainers are less noticeable than Hawley retainers. They fit over the entire arch of teeth and are popular for their aesthetic appeal. However, they might not be as durable and can be prone to wear and tear over time. Clear retainers need to be replaced periodically.
Fixed Retainers
Also known as bonded or permanent retainers, these are attached to the back of the teeth and are not removable. Fixed retainers are ideal for preventing teeth from shifting over the long term and require special cleaning. Only a dental professional can remove them.
